Why Experts Say You Should Only Follow THIS Diet

Many diets promise to help people lose weight, but few can say they’ve earned the title “World’s Best Diet.”

But now researchers from the University of Copenhagen say they’ve uncovered a diet plan that not only helps people lose weight but feel and look good too.

Based off a European study called the Diogenes Diet, researchers says that eating a diet high in protein and low-GI carbs is the best diet you can try–not just because it helps you lose weight, but because it’s been shown to help people continue to sloe weight after 6 months.

Researchers recently published this evidence–and guidelines to following the diet plan–in a new book called World’s Best Diet, co-written by scientist Jennie Brand-Miller.

“This way of eating works because both protein and low GI carbs help us produce more of the satiety hormones that keep us feeling full,” says Brand-Miller, who is a Professor of Human Nutrition at the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre. “The advice over the last 30 years has put too much emphasis on carbohydrates and neglected the satiating effect of protein. At the same time the carbohydrates we were eating were getting fluffier.”

Why Fluffy Carbs are Bad

Fluffy carbs, according to Brand-Miller, are the real reason why people are battling obesity–carbs which are highly processed, provide no nutritional value, and are more likely to spike your blood sugar. Low-GI carbs, however, usually contain more fiber and won’t spike blood glucose, preventing sudden surges of hunger–making it easier to lose weight.

But that isn’t the only reason why low-GI carbs are essential for losing weight, says Brand-Miller.

“The reason these robust carbs are more filling than their more refined cousins like white bread isn’t just that they keep blood sugar levels steadier,” says Brand-Miller. “They also stimulate cells in the gut that produce one of the satiety hormones we need to feel full. These cells are located deep down in the gut–a place that rapidly digested carbs never reach because they’re digested in the upper half of the gut.”

As for any criticisms against the diet, they are few and far between. Although some critics say that low-GI carbs are a myth, most are in agreement that eating a variety of healthy carbohydrates paired with protein is an effective way to lose weight. Better yet, it’s healthier.

“The idea is to modestly lower the carbohydrate content of the diet and modestly increase the protein content to give a ratio of around 2:1 in favour [sic] of carbs,” says Miller.

How to Follow This Diet

Want to try this diet for yourself? Luckily, it’s not too hard to follow–simply switch out sweets and refined carbohydrates for more lean cuts of protein and low-GI carbohydrates. Luckily, most vegetables and whole grains count as low-GI foods, so they aren’t hard to find.
