Why Experts Say This “Youtube” Diet is Dangerous

How far would you go to lose weight?

A Washington State pet supply store owner is vowing to shed those stubborn by eating only pet food for 30 days.

And the reason why is even more bizarre.

“There’s been a lot about the bad foods for humans,” says Dorothy Hunter, owner of the Paws Natural Pet Emporium in Richland, Wash., on her store’s Youtube channel. “We sell holistic, natural foods–good ingredients, USA products–at Paws Natural Pet Emporium. I believe in our products and how good they are; I actually believe our pets are eating better than us. With that said, for the next month, until July 19…I’m going to eat dog food for a month.”

As for how she first came up with this bizarre diet, Hunter says that one day she was restocking store shelves and became hungry–but didn’t want to leave to get a snack.

To her, the next choice was obvious: A bag of pet treats.

“I didn’t have time to get a snack, so I grabbed a bag of treats off the counter, and I was like, ‘Wow, you know, these read better than normal people treats,'” says Hunter. “So, I started eating the treats and I was like, ‘You know, I can do this for 30 days.'”

For right now, Hunter is still trying out her new “doggy” food plan–and insists the treats taste good too.

But is This Diet Safe?

While Hunter may be convinced her pet food diet is safe, is it really a good idea?

According to health experts, you may want to think twice about this diet.

“There are loads of unprocessed, high-fiber, nutrient dense snacks readily available for people,” says Madelyn Fernstrom, a TODAY diet and nutrition editor. “Choosing to experiment with pet food as a long term option is a nutritional negative and might make you sick.”

In addition, the Food and Drug Administration warns that pet food is not meant for human consumption due to differences in nutrient levels. In addition, these foods could be contaminated, making them less than ideal for human consumption.

On the contrary though, the FDA says that both pet and human food are required to meet certain regulations before being sold–so eating pet food wont’ necessarily kill you. It’s just not advised.

“We’re not sure of the ingredients,” says John Tegzes, a Just Food For Dogs consultant. “We’re not sure of potential contamination. And then, nutritionally, it’s not necessarily balanced for human nutrition.”

Bottom line? If you’re that desperate to get healthy, just eat a balanced diet instead. Eating dog food to get healthy is often counterproductive–and could lead to more serious health problems down the road.

I didn’t eat the food to lose weight. And I didn’t eat it thinking it was balanced for humans, I ate the pet food because most of what we sell is all organic cookies freeze dried fruits and vegetables, the meat from many if the companies is USDA grade a sourced. But say what you want I’m at 30 days and not sick ! Compare that to the guy who at McDonalds for a month he almost died….
