This is the Weirdest Way to Cleanse – But People Love It!

Feeling fat and sluggish? If you trust your local naturopath, it’s not because you’re actually fat–instead, it’s the result of a build-up of toxins. As for how to get rid of them, the methods vary in its extremes: Some recommend water fasting for several days, whereas others, like controversial personal trainer Tracy Anderson, recommend a low calorie diet filled with organic produce and fruits galore.

But now one person says there’s a better way to cleanse: By eating ice cream.

“[It is] plant based, raw coconut cream,” says Kippy Miller, owner of Kippy’s Ice Cream Shop in Venice, a popular beachfront neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. “So it is no dairy, no sugar, and no soy. We had 12 people do the yoga ice cream cleanse in February. They lost weight and had more energy.”

However, you won’t be getting a pint of Haagen Dazs to nosh on–instead, you’ll fill yourself up with ice cream made from organic coconut cream, which supposedly has its own set of health benefits.

“While virgin, cold pressed coconut oil has a high level of saturated fat…numerous studies have found that high quality coconut products may contain health properties that far outweigh any health implications associated with a high saturated fat content,” says nutritionist Maren Robins. “In fact, while other oils with a similar level of saturated fat (e.g., butter) are associated with heart disease and cholesterol issues, regular coconut consumption can improve the cholesterol ratio…Evidence suggests that it actually may reduce risk of heart disease and atherosclerosis–the precursor to heart disease.”

However, for a proper cleanse, you’ll need to follow the diet as Miller recommends–which means forking over $240 for a four day “service” where you’ll devour 5 pints of their special ice cream every day. The calorie consumption isn’t high either–it averages out to 1,200 per day.

Should You Really Try This Diet?

For sure, you’ll lose weight on this cleanse, say experts, but one expert says the amount of saturated fat and sugar in this diet concerns him.

“What kind of stood out to me was the calorie range…it is a great range because it’s from 1,000 to 1,200,” says Jason Song, a nutritionist for Zen Foods. “But while I was reading more up on, it’s very high in saturated fat and sugar and that concerned me.”

While Song doesn’t support the diet, many of Miller’s happy customers are in full favor of it–and many continue to shell hundreds of dollars in hopes of taking advantages of this ice cream cleanse.

Want to take advantage of it yourself? Chances are if you don’t live in the Venice area, you’re out of luck–but you can easily replicate the diet by buying five pints of your favorite coconut-based ice cream yourself and keeping the calorie count below 1,200 calories.
