This Special Type of Fat Could Help You Lose More Weight

In years past your doctor may have told you to keep your fat intake low to lose weight, but now a controversial new study published in The Journal of Lipid Research says that a high fat diet could actually help you lose more weight.

But before you think eating chips and cookies are the key to a slimmer bod, think again: Only certain fatty foods containing a specific enzyme, called SCD1, are best for jump starting your weight loss.

“We used a transgenic mouse model, and we took the gene that makes the enzyme that’s not normally expressed and took away it’s regulation to make it active all the time,” says Chad Paton, researcher of the study. “What we found in those animals is they had a hypermetabolic rate compared to the wild mice, increased energy consumption and greatly increased these animals’ exercise capacity.”

In the study, which used laboratory mice to test out a new theory, Paton and his colleagues modified the rodents’ diet so that it contained higher levels of fat containing the enzyme stearoyl-CoA desaturase, or SCD1. They then evaluated how the mice reacted to this diet–and the results thrilled researchers.

“They were increasing their energy consumption, and they experienced greatly increased exercise capacity,” says Paton. “For example, on the exercise wheels, normal mice fatigue after 7 to 10 minutes. These genetically modified animals wouldn’t fatigue for about 70 minutes. So they were running a lot longer. Sedentary mice looked more like exercise-trained mice.”

In conclusion, Paton determined that SCD1 produced significant increases in their activity levels and eating habits–habits which resulted in a lower weight. And he believes the same effects could occur in humans as well, though the effects haven’t been tested yet.

How To Get More Fat Into Your Diet

It’s a dream turned into reality: Eating more fat, specifically those containing enzyme SCD1, could raise your metabolism and help you lose weight. But how can you take advantage? Here are some of the best fats to get into your diet:

  • Walnuts. In previous studies walnuts were shown to be good for battling heart disease, but now a serving of it could also help you lose weight. Best way to enjoy: A handful of walnuts tossed over a salad or added to a stir fry are healthy ways to get in these metabolism-boosting fats.
  • Flaxseeds. Health nuts can’t get enough of it, but if you haven’t tried it yet, it’s time to make it a priority, since these seeds contain high amounts of SCD1. Most people sprinkle it over foods or eat it in bread or tortillas as a convenient way to slim down.
  • Hemp oil. Although cannabis is still illegal, having a serving of hemp is perfectly legal–and just one dose could speed up your metabolism, according to recent reports. Its mild flavor makes it a great accompaniment on salads or pasta.

I eat flaxseed every chance I get! Also eat avocados fairly often, which I believe is very good for you. I cook with olive oil 95% of the time, other times using butter or safflower oil. I know they aren’t the best, but olive oil isn’t always what I want to use for a particular dish. Thx for all your tips!

I cannot eat walnuts due to allergies. The same for other nuts. Any substitutes you can suggest?

    Hi.

In addition to extra weight, particularly belly fat, that I carry I have arthritis bilaterally in thumbs and base of thumbs. What foods are particularly good to reduce inflammation?

Also, I have read that cellular-level inflammation can make it harder to lose weight (possibly related to insulin regulation). Any thoughts on this?

    Thanks,

    L.

I am just getting started on this diet program. Thomas, thank you for your message. As I stated, I have only just begun and wish to learn and to apply all I can to help boost my metabolism, once again (especially at my age). My weight gain, came upon me rather quickly. I have always been petite, strong, energy, vitality etc…, then one day, all of a sudden I could not fit into my clothes. I have tried numerous diet pills, weight loss programs etc… I WILL NOT GIVE UP UNTIL I HAVE REACHED MY WEIGHT GOAL. I am having some good vibs. about this system. Can anyone tell me how to calculate my height in inches and how to ultimately calculate my intake of calories vs everything else? I would appreciate anyone’s reply and/or helpful info. best of luck to us all.
